Will a Study Gap Affect my Study Permit Application?

Updated: Feb 21, 2023

Just as there is no age limit to study in Canada, there is no timeframe for when you can continue your studies.

Many individuals decide to pursue a higher level of education later in life, meaning lots of potential students have a substantial study gap. This should not discourage you from pursuing your education!

However, you should focus on how to address a study gap in your study permit application.

What is a good reason for a study gap?

  • Health issues: life happens, and an unexpected study gap due to illness will not hurt your chances of studying in Canada.

  • Work experience: If you took a study gap to gain relevant work experience, this is considered valid by many schools.

  • Family reasons: It’s not uncommon for a family emergency to halt studies. Events like aging family members or legal issues are valid but should be appropriately explained.

  • Finances: Studying in Canada is expensive! Your chances of studying in Canada will not be squandered because you took some time to save up money.

A study gap isn’t a reason for refusal - but what is?

1. IRCC Not satisfied Applicant will Leave

at the end of their Visa

A study permit is a form of temporary residence and therefore, it has a validity period. One of the most common reasons for refusal is IRCC not being satisfied that the applicant will return to their home country at the end of their visa.

The best way to avoid this reasoning for refusal is to show strong ties to your home country. Family, employment, and assets are all great examples of ties.

2. Insufficient funds

Proof of financial support is critical for your study permit application. A simple mistake is not providing 6 months of bank statements in your proof of funds.

3. Not clear how your education connects with your future goals

IRCC wants to see how your education connects with your future career goals. This is when writing a strong study plan comes in. You must clearly connect your education with your future plans.
