Sault Ste. Marie RCIP 2025 Update: Eligibility, In-Demand Jobs & Key Intake Dates

Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, has been selected as one of 18 communities across Canada to participate in the Rural Community Immigration Pilot (RCIP), a program that replaces the former Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot (RNIP). This initiative aims to strengthen the local workforce by providing businesses with greater capacity to recruit and retain skilled talent.

By facilitating permanent residency for eligible candidates, the program supports economic development and community growth in regions like Sault Ste. Marie.​


Eligibility Criteria for Applicants

To qualify for the RCIP in Sault Ste. Marie, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Secure a valid job offer from a designated employer within the community.

  • Possess at least one year (1,560 hours) of relevant work experience in the past three years.

  • Demonstrate language proficiency by taking an approved test, meeting the Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) appropriate to the job's National Occupational Classification (NOC) level.

  • Hold a Canadian educational credential or its foreign equivalent, validated by an Educational Credential Assessment (ECA).

  • Provide proof of sufficient funds to support themselves and any accompanying family members during the transition to the community.

  • Obtain a community recommendation, which assesses the applicant's intent to reside in Sault Ste. Marie, the authenticity and relevance of the job offer, and the applicant's ties to the community.​

  • Electrical and Electronics Engineers (NOC 21310)

  • Drafting Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22212)

  • Mechanical Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22301)

  • Electrical and Electronics Engineering Technologists and Technicians (NOC 22310)

  • Pharmacy Technicians (NOC 32124)

  • Nurse Practitioners (NOC 31302)

  • Licensed Practical Nurses (NOC 32101)

  • Personal Support Workers (NOC 44101)

  • Therapists in Counseling and Related Specialized (NOC 41301)

  • Social and Community Service Workers (NOC 42201)

  • Early Childhood Educators and Assistants (NOC 42202)

  • Contractors and Supervisors in Various Trades (NOC 72010, 72011, 72014)

  • Industrial Electricians (NOC 72201)

  • Transit Operators (NOC 73301)

  • Machinists and Machining and Tooling Inspectors (NOC 72100)

  • Construction Millwrights and Industrial Mechanics (NOC 72400)

  • Aircraft Instruments, Electrical and Avionics Mechanics, Technicians, and Inspectors (NOC 72404)

  • Food Service Supervisors (NOC 62020) – Hotels and dine-in restaurants only; capped at 25 annually, with no more than 2 per employer

  • Guest Service Supervisors (NOC 62022) – Hotels only; capped at 10 annually

  • Security Guard Supervisors (NOC 62029) – Capped at 20 annually

  • Trade Helpers and Laborers (NOC 75119)

  • Production Workers (NOC 94107)​


Note: Specific caps apply to certain occupations to manage the number of recommendations issued annually.



Application Process

  1. Secure a Job Offer: Obtain a valid job offer from a designated employer in Sault Ste. Marie for a position listed among the priority occupations.​

  2. Community Recommendation: The employer submits a recommendation application to the community on the applicant's behalf.

  3. Community Assessment: The community evaluates the application based on local economic needs, the applicant's qualifications, and their commitment to settling in the area.

  4. Apply for Permanent Residency: Once recommended, the candidate applies to Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) for permanent residency under the RCIP.​

  5. Optional Work Permit: Candidates may apply for a work permit while their permanent residency application is being processed.​

The RCIP in Sault Ste. Marie operates on specific intake periods for 2025:​

  • June 22 – July 5

  • July 20 – August 2
