Upcoming Increase in Permanent Residence Fees Announced by Department of Citizenship and Immigration

In a recent notice issued by the Department of Citizenship and Immigration, it has been announced that there will be a biennial increase in permanent residence fees, effective April 30, 2024. This announcement underscores the ongoing efforts of the Department of Citizenship and Immigration to ensure transparency and efficiency in the immigration process.

This adjustment comes following subsection 303(1.1) and paragraph 294(d) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations. The increase, set to take effect at 9:00:00 a.m. Eastern daylight time on April 30, 2024, and will be based on the cumulative percentage increase to the Consumer Price Index for Canada over the past two years, as published by Statistics Canada. The new fees will be rounded to the nearest five dollars.

Key Highlights:

  • The new rate is based on the cumulative percentage increase to the Consumer Price Index for Canada over the past two years (2022 and 2023).

  • The rate is rounded to the nearest five dollars.

  • Certain applicants, including those in the "Humanitarian and compassionate" and "Public policy" categories, may be exempt from paying the Right of Permanent Residence Fee under specific circumstances.

  • Members of the "Permit holder" class cannot include accompanying family members in their permanent residence applications; each individual must apply as a principal applicant.
