Boost for Health care students as Ontario Expands Learn and Stay Grant

Excellent news for healthcare students seeking to experience living and working in Ontario, the Ontario government, in its bid to connect underserved communities, is seeking to add more healthcare workers to the system. The plan to achieve this is by expanding the Learn and Stay Grant, aimed at providing funding for students studying in priority programs

To refresh memory, this grant was announced in March 2022 for students enrolled in a nursing program. The latest expansion benefits students also enrolled in other programs, including paramedic and medical laboratory technologist programs in priority communities.

Once eligible for the grant, an upfront fee will be received in full, to provide funding for tuition, books, and other direct educational costs. With these provided, a return for working and caring for people in the specific study region, for a term of service after graduation is expected.

How does one become eligible for the grant and its requirements? To be eligible, you must;

  • Successfully apply to and enroll in an eligible program in a priority community.

  • Be an Ontario resident who is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or protected person.

  • Commit to working in the region where you studied when you graduate.

“Expanding Ontario's Learn and Stay grant to include nurses, paramedics, and med-techs in more underserved and growing communities is another innovative solution that connects people to care, closer to home,” said Premier Doug Ford.

Interested and eligible parties are urged to apply, with 2023/24 grant applications starting this spring with a target of 2,500 postsecondary students. Listed are the specific programs and regions:

Through the expanded Learn and Stay grant, students in the health care field are provided with an opportunity to receive funding while being geared towards full-time employment in Ontario. The expanded grant has shown Ontario’s government's need for healthcare workers. Make hay while the sun shines.
