A few months ago did a post on Scholarships for International Students in Canada . It mainly focused on scholarships available for international undergraduate students. Today we focus on scholarship opportunities available for graduate programs in Canada and how you can access them.

Graduate scholarships for international students are mainly based on merit. This means these scholarships are awarded to the best of the best in various fields and programs. They are also mostly scholarships for research based programs. Below are top 5 graduate Scholarship for International Students in Canada

  1. Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarships

  • The Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarship (Vanier CGS) program helps Canadian institutions attract highly qualified doctoral students.

  • Valued at $50,000 per year for three years during doctoral studies

  • Considers three equally weighted evaluation criteria: academic excellence, research potential, and leadership

2. Trudeau Research Fellowships

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation fellowships provide:

  • A $150,000 allowance over three years for research, travel and networking;

  • A $50,000 award;

  • A $25,000 allowance to cover the cost of participation in Foundation events.


  • Researchers active in a field of the humanities and social sciences related to one or more of the Foundation’s four themes; and

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents, or citizens of foreign countries legally allowed to reside in Canada for the funding period.

3. Trudeau Doctoral Scholarships

The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation scholarships provide:

  • $40,000 per year for three years;

  • $20,000 per year for three years, as research and travel allowance;

  • Opportunity for a fourth year: writing or dissemination scholarship;


  • Full-time first or second year students enrolled (or in the process of enrolling) in a doctoral program in the humanities and social sciences; and

  • Canadian citizens or permanent residents enrolled full-time in a doctoral program in Canada, or Canadian citizens enrolled full-time in a doctoral program outside of Canada.

  • Up to one scholar in four per given year may be a foreign national enrolled full-time in a doctoral program at a Canadian institution. This applies in particular to students from emerging nations.

4. Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Value & duration

$70,000 per year (taxable) 2 years (non-renewable)

Eligibility and Area of Research

  • Canadian citizens

  • Permanent residents of Canada

  • Foreign citizens

Areas of research

  • Health research

  • Natural sciences and/or engineering

  • Social sciences and/or humanities

5. CIFAR Global Scholars

Value & duration

  • $100,000 CDN in undesignated research support

  • A two-year appointment to a CIFAR research program

  • Specialized leadership and communication skills training


Applicants can be from anywhere in the world, but applicants must hold a PhD or equivalent degree and be within your first five years of a full-time academic appointment.

Applicants’ research must align with the themes of an eligible CIFAR research program.
