This is one of the most popular question I get from Immigrants looking to relocate to Canada.
To get a job offer in Canada as a foreigner, a work permit is required. However, to get a work permit, a job offer with Positive LMIA is required. Employers are exempt for LMIA if they are hiring citizens from US and Mexico.
A positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) is a document that an employer in Canada may need to get before hiring a foreign worker. To receive a positive LMIA, the employer must show that there was no Canadian or permanent resident available to do the job before offering it to a foreigner. LMIA is processed by Employment and Social Development Canada (EDSC) and is the responsibility of the employer to obtain this assessment. There is usually a fee of $1,000 the employer must pay to process LMIA. Therefore, employers typically avoid this unless you have skills that they can’t find in Canada.
